Stumbling into dahlia farming in a very unplanned way, it has brought me so much joy. I've been growing dahlias for the last 6 years now, nearly doubling our collection to over 1500 different varieties in 2024.
Having launched our flower stand in 2022, I was very fortunate to have met some wonderful people in the community. Meeting so many kind strangers and instantly being able to connect through our love of flowers was/is a pretty cool thing.
Touching memories are shared of what flowers (dahlias especially) mean to them, countless stories of how they caught the flower bug from family members long passed or of their loved ones who also share a passion for growing. So many smiles, my cheeks hurt after these brief connections! That was it, I was hooked on bringing absolute strangers happy memories in this small way by providing a colorful mix of fresh cut flowers, aka 'Joy Jars'.
In 2023, I wanted to kick the feeling of joy up a notch, to give back to our community. $1.00 from every tuber order and flower sale at our stand every season will be donated to one of the awesome non-profits we support.
We will host supply drives on various weekends over the summer accepting food/clothing/supply donations that the organizations can use. I will have lists of the items that are in most need and if you can help with something, that would be amazing!
I'm so excited for this project and one day hope to expand it to other communities across Canada through a Community Blooms ambassador initiative. You have to dream big to make big things happen right?
Just like our beautiful gardens we gain much pride & satisfaction from tending, the planning stage is so very important. Thoughtful groundwork is needed to ensure bountiful growth, that growth translating into making a difference in the communities we love so much.
Thank you for taking the time to read this!
I hope you'll stay tuned & consider becoming part of Community Blooms.
